Soft Feet, Strong Mind: Rediscovering Self-Care at Fifty-Something

Tangie Bell Sharing her being 50something self-care

Ugh, what really happened this morning changed my whole outlook on beauty and self-care at home.

Yesterday, I decided to spend the day doing a little something for myself, not because I didn’t want to leave my house, but because I wanted that peace and pampering without rushing anywhere. The older I get, the more I realize that I need moments like these that are quiet, no hustle and bustle days filled with noise. Whether it’s at home or at a spa, I deserve to be pampered. And so do YOU, but back to the story. :)

Becoming fifty-something has given me a whole new outlook on life. I’m learning that taking care of myself isn’t selfish, Girl, it’s necessary.

So, since I’m home today, I decided to create my own little DIY spa routine to feel good and reset my energy before heading into another busy week. And let me tell you, it was worth every minute I spent in quietness and moving slowly.

My At-Home Spa Day

I started with my feet because, honey, they needed help. When I go to the spa, I usually ask for a sugar scrub. It’s soft, gentle, and this method gets rid of that rough skin without scraping. So, today, I mixed up my own version right in the kitchen.

Here’s what I used:
A scoop of brown and white sugar, a spoon of plain yogurt, and a little honey. I massaged the mix onto my feet with a pumice stone, focusing on the heels and toes. After rinsing, I rubbed in African oils and a little Vaseline before slipping on my socks. My feet felt so smooth I almost didn’t believe it was a DIY job.

Waxing, Nails, and a Little Glam

Next came my face. I didn’t bother with threading this time; I grabbed a microwave wax kit and went to work on my upper lip and chin. I still love my regular spa visits, but knowing I can handle the basics at home makes me feel capable,  confident, and yall it’s super quick and easy..

For my nails, I trimmed and polished them myself. Black nail polish will forever be my go-to. I used my trusty L.A. Colors polish from Walmart and, honestly, they turned out great. Add a quick lash strip and some moisturizer, and I felt like a brand new woman. Honestly, next time I will use a different brand of nail polish. But, for now, this brand did the job.

Side Note: I did add lashes, but later removed and added mascara. I got this pack from the beauty supply store.

What I’ve Learned About Taking Care of Me

Doing all this made me realize something: no matter how old we get, taking care of ourselves should always be a top priority.

We spend so much time working, caring for others, and showing up for everyone else. But gosh darn it, we deserve one unfiltered day just for us. A day with no phone calls, no pressure, no guilt, just self-care, softness, and stillness.

Whether it’s soaking your feet, painting your nails, or putting on a face mask, those little things matter. They remind you that you’re worth the effort.

So yes, I’ll still be booking my professional spa appointments soon. But on quiet weekends like this, I’ll also keep my at-home rituals alive. Life is lifing right now, so pampering myself reminds me that I’m still here, still growing, and still choosing me.

Until Next Time,
Here’s To Living Beyond Existing
