The Mundane Is Saving Me Right Now

Tangie Bell holding a book and talking about things she sees in her local vintage shop

Hey friend, let’s face it, finding and keeping a high level of joy can feel like a lot sometimes, especially when life keeps spinning in uncertain circles. But honestly, I’m learning to find it in the small, mundane things of everyday life.

First things first, we're getting up, putting on actual clothes, and leaving the house to do something besides work. Yep, I said it: I’m skipping out on life’s responsibilities. #dontJudge #lifeislifing

I  know things around the world are still weird and halfway locked down (meaning the government), but that’s exactly why I’m sticking to things right here in my neighborhood.

Lately, I’ve been intentional about supporting local spots. I went to the bookstore and grabbed a few new reads to chill with at home. I’m slowly backing away from the internet, too. Mostly because it feels boring and repetitive. Everybody’s saying the same thing (myself included). I’m not leaving social media, just giving myself room to enjoy things that actually make sense.

Since work has been a little slow, so  I’m back out here smelling city flowers again.
Yes, literally, touching grassy grass.:)

I even picked up a used gardening book, not because I’m actually planting anything, but because I wanted to look at life through a different lens. To my surprise, I was into it. I rediscovered plants I haven’t thought about since forever, outside of my favorite sunflower.

Then I ended up in the crochet section. Baby, I had no idea the crochet world was that deep. The patterns, the color combos, and the creativity… endless. I grabbed a book for my daughter so she can level up her craft game. Yeah, I bet y'all thought this was for me:)

I sat in that bookstore for hours, and just being there, flipping through pages, finding things to try… that’s something the internet will never replace. I’m doing more small things with my family now, things that don’t cost much at all, yet somehow bring more joy than anything we’ve done in a lifetime.

I’ve also been building up my album collection. I just started a wall in my new space at home with a few throwback finds, like Huey Piano from way, way back in the day. I saw it at the bookstore and snatched it up. Then I found a newer album from The Weeknd and grabbed that too. Who can resist their favorite artist? Not me.

Here’s the thing: I’m learning that life is exactly what I make it. I’m enjoying life again, even on days when I’m “doing nothing.” And sometimes doing nothing is really doing something.

I didn’t set big goals for today on purpose. I just want to live in the moment. And darling, it feels good. I used to think hopping on a plane was the only way to have fun. Now I’m finding happiness in the small things, slow days, quiet moments, simple joy,s and rollicking in your city.

Lastly, here’s what I’ve been working on:

Reevaluating my self-worth by not giving energy to things that can’t add one smile to my face.

Not taking life so seriously. It’s okay if someone doesn’t smile, call, or speak. Everyone is in a different place.

Not waiting for life to line up perfectly before I do something.

Taking one day a week just for me. Not wife, not mom, not daughter. Just me. Because being “busy” will age a person overnight, and I refuse.

I’m encouraging YOU to do the same.

If you want to start a business, go back to school, lose weight, gain weight, eat cake, read books, start a new hobby, Girl, do it., Make this year-end about you.

Yep, I said it.
Back to me.

Drop in the comments below and tell me how you're getting back to yourself?
Because Your Joy depends on it.

Until next time,
See ya in a bit.
